Short biography and CV

Sotirios S. Despotis was born in Athens in 1968. He was enrolled in the Faculty of Theology of the School of Theology of the Athens University in the year 1986, from where he received his B.A. in July 1990. At the same time he studied Byzantine and European music at the Skalkota Conservatoire and was a member and a soloist of the Greek Byzantine Choir under the direction of Mr. L. Aggelopoulos.

During the years 1990-1991 he studied at the post-graduate studies programme of the Biblical Studies Department of the Faculty of Social Theology of the Athens University. In September 1991 he continued his post-graduates studies in Germany at the Gutenberg University in Mainz, attending lectures and seminars regarding the Interpretation and Theology of the New Testament, especially the Apocalypse of John by the Professor O. Böcher.

In March 1996 he was appointed teacher of Orthodox Theology to the German Schools in the State of Hessen.  In June 1999 he submitted his doctoral thesis to the Faculty of Social Theology (School of Theology) of the Athens University with subject «The Heavenly Worship at Rev. 4-5».

During his stay in Germany he organized and directed the Greek Music Choir and Orchestra of the Saint George Wiesbaden Parish. He was also been a member of the Churches Council of the same Town, giving lectures about Orthodoxy in the State of Hessen.  In the year 2000 he edited the website of the aforementioned Parish, where he presented the orthodox attestation and life of local Church (http://www.heiliger-georgios-wiesbaden.de/ ).

In May 2001, Dr Sotirios Despotis joined the Faculty of Social Theology (School of Theology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) as a Lecturer. In 2005 he was promoted to Assistant Professor, in 2009 to the degree of Associate Professor and in 2015 to Professor. Since 2005, he has been teaching at the Hellenic Open University the "Orthodoxy in the 20 century" module.

Prof. Sotirios Despotis is a member of SNTS (Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas) and EABS (European Association of Biblical Studies), co-editor of the Biblical Studies Bulletin (Deltion Vivlikon Spoudon = ΔΒΜ), of the Theologia (official Journal of the Church of Greece) and of the Scientific Review of Post-Graduate Program ‘Studies in Orthodox Theology of the Hellenic Open University.
