The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) operates an Equal Access Unit for Persons with Disability and Persons with Special Educational Needs in Athens, with the distinctive title “Accessibility Unit”, which constitutes a permanent and institutionalized Administrative Service of the Institution, which falls under the Department of Student Welfare of the General Directorate of Education.

The goal of the Accessibility Unit (AU) is to provide personalized accommodations and Accessibility Services to every Student with Disability and Student with Special Educational Needs (SwD&SEN) for their equal attendance and participation in courses and workshops during the academic semester and for their participation in any type of examination - evaluation process, depending on the obstacles and limitations they encounter. The Services and adaptations of the AU are provided in accordance with its Internal Operating Regulations (Government Gazette 6849 B'/2024) and the applicable Regulations for Alternative Assessment-Examination Methods of SwD&SEN, which are incorporated into the Internal Regulations for Undergraduate Studies of the University of Athens (article 12, par. 17, Government Gazette 6105/2025 B') as well as the Internal Regulations of the University of Athens (article 52, Government Gazette 4173/2026 B').

Who is eligible to receive services of the AU: students of the University of Athens, but also more generally members of the university community, with certification by a public hospital or institution of: blindness (total or partial), deafness (total or hearing loss), motor disability (upper and/or lower extremities), specific learning difficulty: ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), chronic/serious illness, mental disorders.

Accessibility Advisor Professors: Each Department of the Schools has an Accessibility Advisor Professor (AAP) and his Deputy. The AAP is the link between the SwD&SEN, the professors and the AU. SwD&SEN can consult him on issues related to their studies. The role of the AAP is central, as it avoids the need for the SwD&SEN to contact each professor individually to resolve any obstacles they may encounter. He also plays an important role in implementing reasonable accommodations for the participation of SwD&SEN in the teaching activities of the courses and in their exams and assessments.
